THE Revenger's tragedy

in a new adaptation by Meredith Oakes
Southwark Playhouse
7th-25th March 2006

"Were it not for women and gold there would be no damnation."

A tale of vengeance, lust and violence that explodes onto the stage in the finest traditions ofJacobean tragedy.

In a brand new adaptation by Meredith Oakes (previous plays include premieres at the Royal Court, Hampstead, National Theatre and adaptations for the Gate and Young Vic), this production featured a twenty-two strong ensemble cast, which was the largest ever to play the Southwark Playhouse, and was one the fastest selling shows in the theatre's history.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAID

“Outstanding…Oakes’ deft adaptation is taken at a breathless gallop…and the black pitch of murderous comedy bubbling away beneath the surface has you guiltily laughing throughout…
Ah, Jacobean tragedy – don’tcha just love it?”

Christopher Hart, Sunday Times

“This romp of a revival certainly entertains…Marshall’s amused detachment draws in the audience as delighted conspirators."

Kieron Quirke, Evening Standard

“The production gleefully embraces the ripe excesses of this cautionary tale…in Meredith Oakes’ clear adaptation and Gavin McAlinden’s sharp, modern-dress production…the staging relishes the grim, sardonic humour…Kris Marshall gives a driven performance…a gutsy staging of this dark play.”
